Further to previous submissions on this subject I wish to add my support to what Mark and David were saying. I haven't commented on this message board for some time but continue to follow progress with great interest and I continue to promote it on our Maritime Britain website.
Yes this project will take a great deal of resources and funds to get off the ground and full consideration must be taken of this before people wade in too deep. However John does have a point it does help to at least have an organisation to coordinate efforts and discussions with the owner (however unfruitful they may be!). As David says we don't really want well meaning but unrealistic approaches being made that present the wrong image and damage your reputation. However ownership is also important and that does have to be resolved. However I see no reason why setting up a group and dealing with the owner cannot be done in tandem. But yes unless the owner is willing then it will get no further for the time being.
Mark mentioned my RMS Windsor Castle Society. I believe that it was worth having the group formed despite its aim eventually being unsuccessful. This is because it did help promote the proposal, raise awareness and coordinate things positively. Mark seems to be suggesting that our lack of success with the Windsor organisation and the project shows why you shouldn't form a group. However I believe it actually does the opposite it shows why a trust or group does help. So neither of you are wrong it is just that action needs to be taken on a number of fronts not just one. You can't just set up a society, you need ownership to be sorted out as well and then you need funding etc to follow on from that.
John I do understand your frustration at the seeming lack of progress with the Ryde, but Mark does have a point a society without progress as well in tandem on the ownership and funding sides is likely to lead to nothing. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't set up a group if that assists you in coordinating and promoting the idea and gaining the trust of the owner and leads to you taking ownership of the vessel etc. But Mark is really trying his very best and I am sure is just as frustrated as you with the lack of response from the owner.
But it is not as if no progress has been made, at least he and David have discovered and evaluated more fully the costs and what may be involved. Mark also has set up this wonderful website promoting the plight of the ship and this message board for discussions. So it is not as if no progress has been made. It is just that little progress has been made on the ownership and funding fronts.
So please take things in perspective and don't be so hard on Mark. He is only stating the obvious and being realistic by saying while we can progress on other fronts, the ownership issue will still remain as unresolved. But this is crucial.
However I would suggest that this website could perhaps be improved slightly to include a concept section describing what the Ryde restoration would be if progress could be made. What would the Ryde do if saved? Also why should be Ryde be saved? This section also could describe the evaluation work carried out by Mark and David to investigate more fully Ryde's condition and the likely costs of such a project. Then people can see the full picture of what may be involved. You must not run before you can walk and you must not go in too deep before you know exactly what will be involved, otherwise there is the risk of things going very wrong unintentionally.
I wish you the very best of luck in continuing on the progress made so far. It will be a long slog of course but do be careful.
Alex
