Hi John,
I do understand your eagerness to form a society, and believe me, I have put a lot of time and money into seeing something happen with Ryde, and we have had people offer the owner money, offer him money and a date in which a barge will be in the river to pick the vessel up with. Offer him schemes whereby he can still have a controlling factor of the vessel, and none of these have come to fruition.
In short, it is not exactly the owners fault because as we say, can he believe anyone will actually take on the responsibilty. But also it is not down to a lack of trying either as you almost suggest in your comments.
If you feel that starting a society will make the difference, then please feel free. I would be more than happy to put you into contact with all the contacts I have and people that wish to help.
Didnt the Southsea Society have a constitution? Didnt they even have money they invested in the vessel for the tow back to Portsmouth? And didnt they get stung harder than any of us can imagine!! I certainly would not be wishing to head up any society that ends up being so badly torn apart.
How about the RMS Windsor Castle Society? I went to the first meeting on that. I know Alex Naughton and others did much work on that Society, and where is the vessel now? India!!
The facts are that we know roughly how much a full restoration will cost. We have people ready to do remedial works and move the vessel. We have loads of people who have stated a willingness to volunteer. If we put £15k together between us we can have a survey done
which will give us a stratagy to refloat the vessel, and give us more precise figures on the restoration.
We have done the initial works, but this has got us nowhere.
I know time is running out. I visit the vessel at least once a week to see how time is taking its toll. But what can we do? Without ownership of the vessel, there is nothing we can do without taking a huge risk. The formation of a society will just bring more work and more money spent, and could likely still achieve nothing.
Please feel free to comment, as believe me, I do wish to see her saved. I have put more time and effort into this than most people, so any suggestions would be great. I hope you can understand what I am saying though.
Mark.
