Does anyone know the whereabouts of the pictures of the Ryde which adorned her passageways whilst in static use? I believe there are six pictures in total including one of the ship laid up at the mooring hulk, and one of her leaving Ryde Pier.
The reason I ask, is that I am in touch with the wife of the former Captain of the Ryde, Eric Yealland, who presented the owners of the ship with these pictures on loan during the 1970s. Mrs Yealland is concerned with the material state of the images, and fears they may be lost.
Interestingly Mrs Yealland who is something of an expert of the Ryde worked in the ship's engine room whilst her husband was on the bridge. It was she who suggested the name Ryde Queen to the new owners in 1970. Owing to part of the sale agreement, the Ryde was not allowed to retain her name in case it was to be used again by British Rail Ferries. Not wishing the ship to lose its name, Mrs yealland piped up 'why not call her Ryde Queen'.
Eric Yealland commanded various ships in the Southern Railway/BR Ryde - Portsmouth fleet, and was on the bridge of the MV Southsea during her first encounter with thick fog resulting in the 'Magic eye' article appearing in the local press. Despite the mod cons of the Denny sisters, the Captain's favourite was always the Ryde. Sadly the Captain died a few years back, however his wife still keeps an eye on what she affectionately refers to as 'my ship'.
